Green Path

The homebuilding and remodeling industry has gone through historic market challenges. As we emerge we find a changed market. Eighty percent of first-time homeowners say they either really want or must have an overall energy-efficient home. Industry observers project 900% growth in certification of new homes and remodeling projects over the next five years, culminating in 50% of all projects being certified at some level by 2016.

It is a unanimous projection: home performance and energy efficiency demand will soar requiring credible, specific certification of these projects. There are multiple certification options for builders, but virtually all add significant costs and present administrative challenges for contractors.

MN’s Green Path meets the market as we find it. We begin with our trademarked Home Performance Report (HPR). This easy to understand document is the cornerstone of the program, and provides home buyers and homeowners with a uniform "window sticker" based upon RESNET's Home Energy Rating System (HERS) scoring. With independent energy testing and a consistent index (HERS) documented by a third party, prospective home buyers have a valuable tool that helps them understand expected energy usage in the homes they are considering (especially when compared to older resale homes).

Additionally, builders and remodelers who wish to take the next step and offer their clients green certification, MN Green Path offers holistic green options that allow home buyers and remodeling clients the freedom to choose the green features that are most important to them. Two levels (Advanced and Master) for new homes allow the builder to combine elective credits that make most sense for individual customers.

If you would like to get started on the Green Path, your first step is to get your new homes rated by a RESNET certified rater. (For a list of local firms, please contact Mary Schweich at BATC.) Both Xcel and Center Point Energy have subsidy programs for energy rating, so many builders will find they can complete this step for no cost.  Remodelers and builders looking for either certification levels can learn more at the MN Green Path website, or by contacting Mary at BATC.
