Home remodeling offers so many opportunities for energy improvement. However, some measures or upgrades come with potential harm to the building or the occupant. How do we know when that risk will be minimal or when it might push the house "over the cliff"? When does the "order matter" and how do we communicate that to the owner? This course will look at both robust and risky approaches to home remodeling and will close with the “Best of NorthernSTAR”, a systems-guided retrofit of a 1-1/2 story home in north Minneapolis supported by DOE's Building America program.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply key building science principles to remodeling scenarios
  • Recognize important system connections that can impact long-term performance
  • Identify remodeling activities that can influence energy, durability, and indoor air quality
  • Recognize critical test methods and protocols that can be used to avoid performance failures
  • Identify pathways and approaches that can lead to improved remodeling success
  • Identify resources that can improve projects and outcomes
